12 Voltas (or 12 Labyrinths) — A secret carved by nature in São Vicente

At the foot of the iconic Monte Cara, in São Vicente, lies a little-known yet deeply striking place: 12 Voltas, also known by many as 12 Labyrinths. It’s not a man-made labyrinth — it’s a natural masterpiece, slowly shaped over thousands of years.

How did this place form?

The rocks of 12 Voltas are of volcanic origin, typical of the Cabo Verde archipelago. Over time, the constant action of wind, rain, and temperature changes sculpted narrow corridors, unexpected curves, and undulating walls, creating a true natural labyrinth

The name comes from the walking experience itself: the route is short but full of twists, turns, and passages that make you lose your sense of direction. Each “turn” reveals a new perspective, a new light, a new texture.
